The Best Alternatives to Use During the Detox and Beyond

Some of the best alternatives are not too far out of reach and may have been under your nose the entire time. Next time when you are shopping, use these products not only as alternatives but incredible and highly versatile additions to your whole food plant based diet.

Hummus

Where to find:

Your local grocery stores will no doubt have a hummus of some kind but they will probably have the most commercialized item out there. For great Hummus go to Whole Foods.

Use with:

Chips (sweet potato chips are perfectly valid during Detox), vegetables, carrots, celery stalk, and apples.

Hemp Milk/ Hemp Protein/ Hemp Everything

Hemp products are an up and coming product that is finally starting to gain the popularity and notoriety it deserves. Hemp has long been praised for being a complete protein and a perfect balanced ratio of essential omega-6/omega-3 fatty oils.

“In clinical studies, these benefits are often achieved using omega-3-rich fish and flax oil supplements. A more “holistic” approach consists of shifting our general dietary fat intake towards nuts and oils offering a better omega-6/omega-3 ratio. Hemp nut and oil offer an omega-6/omega-3 ratio of 3:1 or less, depending on plant variety. This exceeds the target ratio of 4:1 and compensates in part for omega-3 deficiencies in the rest of our diet. No other vegetable oil offers EFAs at such high concentrations and, more importantly, in such a desirable omega-6/omega-3 ratio.”

Uses:

Treat it like normal milk or a creamy addition to your cooking. Do not be afraid to mix things up.

Taste:

The original unsweetened is definitely not the greatest tasting beverage in the world but keep in mind the large amounts of vitamins and nutrients you are getting. It has an earthy taste and texture to it, so make sure to shake it up. The benefit of using the original flavor unsweetened is that there is very low amounts of sugar; thus, it will not affect your bottom line which is your A1C or spike your blood sugar. Obviously when you get off of the Detox and lowered your A1C to an appropriate level then it would be perfectly fine to add in the flavored version of HEMP. This goes for flavored versions of all the “milks” regardless of the base (HEMP, Coconut, and Almond).

Here are some of the varieties of foods you can eat with Hemp in mind.

The Milk “TEMPT” as shown above is one choice. Another is the normal seeds.

Sprinkle these over your salad, meal, or snack. Hemp seeds are truly a great source of protein and essential fatty acids that can work as a coating agent on any of your foods smothering the entree in protein and essential oils.

Use as the base of your protein shake or any other shake, smoothie, etc.

Taste:

The original flavor is an earthy, chunky texture. Yes I know that sounds horrible and for some it might be but for others who can handle living on the wildest side, downing this drink obviously has FAR superior benefits than any other protein powder out there. Here is a simple list of why.

You can find almost if not all of this Whole Foods, they will have the widest selection of organic beans, legumes, seeds, etc.

Uses: 

Each bean can be used and mixed with your brown rice or simply as a side. Cook several of the products together and make a meal out of it. This is where you have to get a little creative.

Taste:

Well they are all different in many ways and I have not tried every single nut, seed, bean, legume but the black beans at Sprouts are wonderful and do not need any additional spice.

To can or not to can that is the Question:

This is probably the only time we will ever, ever, ever, ever, recommend canned products of any kind and it is still not our most recommended but because of the low price, great taste and little preparation involved, eating ORGANIC canned beans from Whole Foods should be totally fine.

This rule ONLY works on ORGANIC canned beans. Any other canned product of any kind is not recommended and strictly prohibited unless it is an organic bean product.

Avocado Dip, Dressing & Other Uses

Avocado is known around the world as one of nature’s super-foods. Filled with anti-oxidants, essential fats, oils and nutrients makes this food an excellent choice. I recommended this product because it makes things a bit easier when you are on the go and do not have time to cut up or make your own avocado dressing/guacamole/condiment.

Uses:

Use this as a dressing, condiment or dip. It is excellent for spreading on sandwiches (GF bread of course) to cook and prepare food with, or use it as a dip for your sweet potato chips. Using this not only gives you a large amount of health benefits but spices up your entree/snack as well. Avocadoes are low on the Glycemic Index.

Taste: 

The taste is probably what will keep you coming back to this product besides the luxury of not cutting up an avocado and wasting time. A rich, moderately thick, smooth creamy texture lightly seasoned lightly salty but tastes fantastic.
